SUDBURY - Hospital officials, community leaders and health care partners gathered today to celebrate the official start of construction for the Hôpital régional de Sudbury Regional Hospital (HRSRH) one-site hospital. The event marked the beginning of phase two construction.

“The government is committed to improving Ontario's health care system by rebuilding hospitals,” said Rick Bartolucci, Minister of Northern Development and Mines and MPP for Sudbury. “The redevelopment of Sudbury Regional Hospital is important to everyone in the region and we're pleased to see construction of phase two underway. Our hospital will be a state-of-the-art facility that will continue to play a vital role in providing health care and treatment to residents of our community.”

“I would like to thank our hospital staff, physicians, volunteers, community leaders, health care partners, donors, and, of course, the community for their generous support for this project,” said Gisele Chretien, Chair of the HRSRH Board of Directors.  “This truly is a celebration for us.  We are looking forward to this project being completed and our one-site hospital being available for all members of our community.”

Over the next two and a half years, EllisDon Corporation will build and finance phase two of the hospital's redevelopment project.  Construction is expected to be completed in late 2009.

Phase two of the project will consolidate all hospital-based acute and rehabilitation services from three sites to one.  This project will help to improve health care services by providing:

  • A new emergency department
  • 17 operating rooms
  • An expanded intensive care unit
  • Modernized medical equipment
  • New Dialysis Stations
  • Expanded cardiac catheterization lab and cardiac rehabilitation services
  • Enhanced rehabilitation services for physiotherapy, respiratory and speech

“This project is not only about bringing all of our hospital services together, but also all of our people - combining their expertise, skills and talent under one comprehensive approach to patient care,” added HRSRH President and CEO, Vickie Kaminski.

Infrastructure Ontario will work with HRSRH to redevelop the hospital, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable.  Infrastructure Ontario is a Crown corporation dedicated to managing some of the province's larger and more complex infrastructure renewal projects - ensuring they are built on time and on budget.

This project is guided by principles outlined in the Province's Building a Better Tomorrow framework, which ensures public ownership of core assets such as hospitals, schools, and water and wastewater facilities.  The HRSRH project is one of many infrastructure projects being upgraded and modernized under ReNew Ontario, the government's five-year, $30-billion plus public infrastructure investment plan.
