Wing To Be Demolished To Make Way for New, State-of-the-Art Facility

The 70 Wing South of Henderson General Hospital at Hamilton Health Sciences will be demolished. Demolition work on the hospital's 70 Wing South began on July 3 and is expected to continue over several weeks.

“This demolition work brings us one step closer to providing the residents of Hamilton with an expanded Henderson General Hospital,” said Judy Marsales, MPP for Hamilton West who was onsite with hospital officials to celebrate the work in progress.

The 70 Wing South was built in the 1950s. The contractor demolishing the wing will also clear the site to prepare for the main redevelopment project at the Henderson site, which involves over 400,000 square feet of new construction and 35,000 square feet of renovated space.

“This demolition and redevelopment project represents progress being made to Hamilton Health Sciences for the benefit of the residents in this community,” said Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal David Caplan. “It also demonstrates that our government is fulfilling its commitment to modernizing Ontario hospitals and stimulating economic growth.”

“This redevelopment is one of many hospital projects across the province that will help us meet our objectives to provide better health care services for Ontario patients and healthcare workers” said Minister of Health and Long-Term Care George Smitherman.

“This marks an important milestone for us - one that brings us closer to achieving our vision of a renovated and expanded health care facility that will benefit the entire community as well as the staff, nurses, physicians, auxiliary and patients of Hamilton Health Sciences,” said Dr. Bill Evans, President, Juravinski Cancer Centre and executive lead at Henderson General Hospital.

The main redevelopment project at the Henderson site involves renovations to various areas of the hospital, and construction of a new building to provide enhanced hospital services and a full-range of acute inpatient and ambulatory services as well as support for the Juravinski Cancer Centre including: oncology beds, Intensive Care Unit, Cardiac Care Unit, Diagnostic Imaging, Operating Rooms, Emergency Services, Outpatient Clinics and support areas.

Construction of the main project is expected to begin in late 2007.

Infrastructure Ontario will work with Hamilton Health Sciences to redevelop the Henderson site, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable. Infrastructure Ontario is a Crown corporation dedicated to managing some of the Province's larger and more complex infrastructure renewal projects - ensuring they are built on time and on budget.

The projects are guided by principles outlined in the Province's Building a Better Tomorrow framework, which ensures public ownership of core assets such as hospitals, schools, and water and wastewater facilities. The Hamilton Health Sciences Henderson General Hospital project is one of many infrastructure projects being upgraded and modernized under ReNew Ontario, the government's five-year, $30-billion plus public infrastructure investment plan.
