BURLINGTON, ON - Cannon Design Ltd., a Toronto architectural firm, has been selected to lead the planning, design and compliance aspects of the Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital project, the hospital's first major redevelopment in more than 40 years.

The project will include the construction of a new, six-storey patient-care tower and significant renovations to existing space. Highlights of the project include:

  • 77 additional inpatient beds
  • expansion of the diagnostic imaging and medical diagnostics uni
  • new operating rooms, post-anaesthetic care unit and expanded ambulatory procedures are
  • a new ambulatory care and cancer centre
  • a new main entrance
  • a new laboratory

The project will also see the construction of a new, stand-alone power plant that will serve the expanded facility. Committed to environmental sustainability, Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital has also targeted Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver certification for the new facility. When the project is complete, the growing community will have enhanced access to a larger, more modern hospital.

The planning, design and compliance team will establish the guidelines and performance requirements the successful building team must meet when preparing their designs. The team will also monitor construction progress and provide coordination and oversight services throughout the course of the project.

Once the planning, design and compliance aspects are completed, the hospital and Infrastructure Ontario will issue a request for qualifications for a company to design, build and finance the project, using the alternative financing and procurement model. Under this model, risks associated with the design, construction and financing of complex hospital projects are transferred to the private sector.

Infrastructure Ontario and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care are working with Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital to expand and renovate the facility, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable.
