KING CITY - Dialog Design has been selected to lead the planning, design and compliance aspects of the Seneca College King Campus Phase I expansion in York Region. The team will be responsible for establishing guidelines and performance requirements for the buildings and will also monitor construction progress and provide oversight services throughout the course of the project.

The King Campus expansion includes:

  • a new academic facility to accommodate approximately 25 new classrooms, computer labs, specialty labs for training health care practitioners, a library, learning commons, and student study space;
  • a new student centre, which will include a multi-purpose athletic and recreation space featuring a gymnasium, fitness centre, informal study areas and event spaces, partially funded by the Seneca Student Federation and the Student Athletic Association; and,
  • upgrades to Garriock Hall - the main academic facility - and to existing site services.  The project will create space for 1,450 additional students while enhancing the quality of student learning and the campus life experience. When complete, King Campus will provide teaching and learning opportunities for more than 5,000 full-time students.

A request for qualifications (RFQ) has been issued for a company to design, build and finance the project, using Infrastructure Ontario's (IO's) alternative financing and procurement model. Under this model, risks associated with the design, construction and financing of complex projects are transferred to the private sector. Once the RFQ process is closed and submissions are evaluated, companies will be shortlisted and invited to submit a request for proposals in fall 2014.

IO and the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities are working together with Seneca to procure and deliver the new facilities.

IO is a Crown agency of the Province of Ontario that delivers large, complex infrastructure renewal projects on time and on budget. Over the last six years, the province has applied IO's alternative financing and procurement model to more than 83 major projects valued at approximately $38 billion, saving taxpayers an estimated $3 billion. IO also manages one of the largest real estate portfolios in Canada, provides municipalities and eligible public sector clients with financing to renew public infrastructure, and leverages its private-sector expertise to manage major commercial transactions on behalf of the province.

With campuses across the Greater Toronto Area, Seneca offers degrees, diplomas and certificates renowned for their quality and respected by employers. Combining the highest academic standards with practical, hands-on learning, expert teaching faculty and the latest technology ensures Seneca graduates are career-ready.
