Short-Listed Construction Teams Invited to Bid on Women’s College Hospital Project

TORONTO - Plans for Women's College Hospital's new building project took another step forward today when the hospital and Infrastructure Ontario released a request for proposals (RFP) to short-listed teams to design, build, finance and maintain the new facility, which will be built on the hospital's current site on Grenville Street in downtown Toronto.

The new facility, which will replace existing outdated buildings, will further enhance Women's College Hospital's ability to fulfill its mandate as Ontario's first and only stand-alone academic ambulatory care hospital and to be a provincial leader for women's health care, research and education. 

Health-care benefits as a result of the project include: 

• Consolidation of primary care, chronic disease management, surgical services, diagnostics and mental health programs all delivered on an ambulatory basis. 
• A rapid diagnostic model for women's health and improved medical and diagnostic imaging services in an ambulatory setting. 
• Comprehensive services in breast, thyroid and skin cancers. 
• Development of an Academic Ambulatory Surgical Centre. 
• Expanded research units to facilitate women's health research. 
• Co-location of research, education and patient care spaces to create stronger links between researchers, educators and clinicians. 
• Improved patient experience with more privacy and effective movement of people.  

“Today's announcement marks an important milestone for Women's College Hospital and the community it serves,” said George Smitherman, Deputy Premier, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure and MPP for Toronto Centre. “This project is one of many in our government's $30-billion plus investment plan to modernize public infrastructure while ensuring value for taxpayer dollars.”

“This project will not only upgrade and modernize health services for women, but also improve access to quality care,” said David Caplan, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care.

A request for qualifications issued in October 2008, short-listed the three building teams with the development, design, construction, financial, and facilities management capacity to undertake a project of this size and complexity.

Once submissions to the RFP are received and evaluated, a winning project team will be selected and announced in spring 2010; construction is scheduled to begin in fall 2010. A copy of the RFP is available on Infrastructure Ontario's website at www.infrastructureontario.ca.

Infrastructure Ontario and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care are working with Women's College Hospital to develop the new facility, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable. Infrastructure Ontario is a Crown corporation dedicated to managing some of the province's larger and more complex infrastructure renewal projects - ensuring they are built on time and on budget.
