Request for Qualifications Issued For The Ottawa Hospital Regional Cancer Centre Expansion
OTTAWA - Residents of the Ottawa region are a step closer to improved cancer care today with the release of a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to shortlist teams to build and finance the expansion of The Ottawa Hospital Regional Cancer Centre on its General Campus and at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital.
The Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre project is an integrated cancer program that aims to improve cancer treatment by expanding radiation and associated cancer services at two local hospitals.
At The Ottawa Hospital, the project includes expansion and renovation of the Ottawa Hospital Regional Cancer Centre with the addition of two new radiation machines and enhanced radiation therapy equipment at the General site. This will improve access to treatment by increasing the total number of radiation machines from six to eight.
At the Queensway-Carleton Hospital, a new building addition will create space for three radiation machines, providing Ottawa area patients with greater access to radiation therapy and cancer care provided by the Regional Cancer Centre.
“This marks an important milestone for the Ottawa region,” said Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal David Caplan. “The project is part of the government's five-year $30 billion plus infrastructure investment plan that represents the biggest investment in health care in more than a generation.”
“This is a sign of the government's commitment to upgrade and modernize health care,” said George Smitherman, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care.
“This is one of many projects in the McGuinty government's five-year infrastructure renewal plan to modernize and expand health care facilities,” said Jim Watson, Minister of Health Promotion and MPP Ottawa West-Nepean. “The government's commitment to Ottawa-area hospitals is important to everyone in our community. I'm particularly proud that a cancer care facility will also be built on the site of the Queensway-Carleton Hospital - serving residents in Nepean and the West-End and Ottawa valley.”

Pre-qualified project teams will be invited to submit a response to a Request for Proposal (RFP).
The Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre project RFQ was issued as part of a combined qualification process including healthcare infrastructure projects in four other cities across the province.
The Ottawa Hospital Regional Cancer Centre and the Queensway-Carleton Hospital will manage this project with Infrastructure Ontario, a crown corporation dedicated to the renewal of Ontario's hospitals, courthouses and other essential public assets.
Ensuring appropriate public control and ownership, Infrastructure Ontario uses private financing to strategically rebuild vital infrastructure, on time and on budget.
All infrastructure projects will be guided by the principles in the government's Building a Better Tomorrow framework, ensuring public ownership of core public assets such as hospitals, schools and water and wastewater infrastructure.
