Sign Highlights Major Renovation and Expansion

A sign was unveiled today at Hamilton Health Sciences' Hamilton General Hospital site revealing the future of healthcare improvements in the community.

The project sign, highlighting key components of the major renovation and expansion project, was unveiled by Judy Marsales, MPP for Hamilton West and Murray Martin, President and CEO, Hamilton Health Sciences.

“Today's event marks another step toward greater access to improved health care in Hamilton,” said MPP Marsales. “By improving health care infrastructure, we are putting the foundation in place for modern service delivery in our hospitals - demonstrating the McGuinty government's commitment to families and individuals.”

“This redevelopment project is great news for our staff - people who are passionate about providing high quality health care in our community,” said Murray Martin, President and CEO, Hamilton Health Sciences. “By moving forward with the Hamilton General Hospital project, the Ontario government is showing its support for the residents of our community and the healthcare professionals working for Hamilton Health Sciences.”

Redevelopment of the Hamilton General Hospital will include consolidation of its current Acquired Brain Injury and Rehabilitation services from 14 different buildings to one site resulting in space for an additional 44 beds and more efficient ambulatory programs.

A new three-storey 100,000 square-foot building will accommodate all ambulatory and outreach services, including a therapy pool on the ground floor and 91 inpatient beds on the two floors above.

Construction is expected to begin in fall 2007.

Infrastructure Ontario will work with Hamilton Health Sciences to redevelop Hamilton General Hospital, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable. Infrastructure Ontario is a Crown corporation dedicated to managing some of the province's larger and more complex infrastructure renewal projects - ensuring they are built on time and on budget.

This project is guided by principles outlined in the Province's Building a Better Tomorrow framework, which ensures public ownership of core assets such as hospitals, schools, and water and wastewater facilities. The Hamilton Health Sciences General Hospital project is one of many infrastructure projects being upgraded and modernized under ReNew Ontario, the government's five-year, $30-billion plus public infrastructure investment plan.
