BELLEVILLE - A sign was unveiled today at Quinte Health Care Belleville General, revealing the future of health care improvements in the community. The project sign, which highlights key components of the major renovation and expansion project, was uncovered by hospital and government officials.

The official sign was unveiled by Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal, David Caplan, and Lloyd Churchill, Quinte Health Care Board Chair.   Leona Dombrowsky, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and MPP for Hastings-Frontenac-Lennox and Addington; Ernie Parsons, MPP for Prince Edward-Hastings; and Lou Rinaldi, MPP for Northumberland, also participated.

“This redevelopment project is crucial for residents of Hastings and Prince Edward County,” said Caplan. “By improving health care infrastructure, we are putting the foundation in place for modern service delivery in our hospitals -- demonstrating the McGuinty government's commitment to families and individuals.”

“Quinte Health Care is excited to see our redevelopment project moving forward,” said Churchill.  “We're pleased to be working closely with Infrastructure Ontario to deliver this initiative for the benefit of our community.”

Redevelopment of Quinte Health Care includes:

  • construction of a new wing at the Belleville site
  • expansion of the complex continuing care and rehabilitation units
  • a small addition to expand the intensive care unit
  • redeveloping support services such as food services
  • new facilities for the Children's Treatment Centre
  • an increase in overall hospital capacity, with 77 new beds

In future phases, Quinte Health Care will renovate and redevelop the emergency department, hospital laboratory, surgical suites and medical and mental health units.

Infrastructure Ontario and Quinte Health Care announced recently that M. Sullivan & Son Limited has been selected to build and finance phase one of the expansion and redevelopment project.  Construction is expected to begin in March 2007.

Infrastructure Ontario will work with Quinte Health Care to redevelop the hospital, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable.  Infrastructure Ontario is a Crown corporation dedicated to managing some of the Province's larger and more complex infrastructure renewal projects - ensuring they are built on time and on budget.

This project is guided by principles outlined in the Province's Building a Better Tomorrow framework, which ensures public ownership of core assets such as hospitals, schools, and water and wastewater facilities.  The Quinte Health Care project is one of many infrastructure projects being upgraded and modernized under ReNew Ontario, the government's five-year, $30-billion plus public infrastructure investment plan.
