Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and Humber River Hospital announced today Humber's new acute care hospital has reached substantial completion.

The new hospital will open with full operations and services to patients in October.

Located in north Toronto, the hospital will have increased patient capacity from 549 beds up to 656 beds. It will enable Humber River to provide a more comprehensive range of acute care services and support for inpatient and outpatient hospital programs. The new 1.8 million square foot hospital will offer:

  • greater access to high quality acute care hospital services
  • reduced wait times
  • expanded emergency services
  • increased specialized outpatient services
  • modern diagnostic equipment for better patient diagnosis and treatment
  • updated infectious disease containment systems to monitor and prevent a broad range of infections

Plenary Health Care Partnerships was selected to deliver the project and construction began in September 2011. One of the largest Alternative Financing and Procurement projects in the province, the new hospital was completed on time and on budget. At the peak of construction, more than 1,300 workers were on site daily.

The project was designed and built to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Silver certification, incorporating environmentally sustainable construction practices and energy-efficient design.

Infrastructure Ontario, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term care and Humber River Hospital worked together to deliver the project.
