MILTON, Ont. - Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and Halton Healthcare announced today that the Milton District Hospital expansion project has reached substantial completion, which means construction is now complete.

The Milton District Hospital expansion has been built to meet the increasing care needs of Canada's fastest growing community and accommodate new technologies that are changing the way hospital care is delivered. The expansion added 330,000 square feet of space to the existing 125,000 square foot hospital and will provide Milton residents with improved access to the hospital services they need, close to home.

With the achievement of this major milestone, Halton Healthcare now has full access to the expansion and will begin preparing the space for occupancy. The hospital is expected to begin providing patient care services in the new space in fall 2017.

Through this project, patients in Milton will benefit from:

  • Modern emergency, surgical services, medical/surgical inpatient units, intensive care, maternal newborn and diagnostic imaging.
  • Overall capacity increase from 63 to 129 inpatient beds.
  • Eighty per cent of the patient rooms in the expansion are single-patient rooms for improved infection prevention and control and to provide increased patient privacy.
  • Addition of the hospital's first Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine.
  • Addition of a Level 2A Special Care Nursery for newborns who need special care and monitoring.

The Milton District Hospital expansion project underwent an open, fair and competitive procurement process. The Plenary Health team submitted the proposal that delivered the best value for Ontario taxpayers. The team is comprised of Developer: Plenary Group (Canada) Ltd.; Design-Builder: PCL Constructors Canada Inc.; Architects: B+H Architects, RTKL Associates; Financial Advisor: RBC Capital Markets; Facility Manager: Johnson Controls Canada LP. Construction began in May 2015.
