Features

  • Construction of a new, multi-storey building with space to accommodate 30 courtrooms.
  • A three-storey glazed atrium that brings natural light deep into the building.
  • Enhanced accommodation for interpretation, including one jury room permanently equipped for simultaneous interpretation and three portable interpretation booths.

 

Community and Green Benefits

  • Bringing justice services together under one roof in a modern, accessible facility helps reduce delays in the court system and increases access to justice.
  • Barrier-free design includes no courthouse steps, five barrier-free courtrooms, infrared hearing assistance and barrier-free witness stands, jury boxes and spectator positions in all courtrooms.
  • The new facility attained Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) Gold certification, which focuses on energy efficiency, healthy indoor environments and reduced greenhouse emissions.
  • Capacity for expansion and internal flexibility to ensure maximum usefulness throughout its lifetime.
  • A contemporary design that fits into the downtown context and provides a new civic plaza in the heart of downtown Kitchener.

Economic Benefits

  • At the peak of construction, it is estimated that 250 workers were on site daily.
