TORONTO - The Credit Valley Hospital and Infrastructure Ontario have selected Bondfield Construction Co. Ltd. to build and finance the hospital's Phase II Expansion and Redevelopment Project - expanding the hospital with approximately 270,000 square feet of new construction and 70,000 square feet of renovation.

The expansion will result in enhanced hospital services, including increasing capacity from 392 to 471 beds with additional room for growth and the doubling of the number of labour and delivery rooms from seven to 15. Other improvements include providing a new high-dose radiation therapy suite and resources for expanded cancer treatments, additional surgical oncology, palliative and complex continuing care beds, more capacity for neonatal care, and increased diagnostic services and support areas. An expanded laboratory from approximately 15,000 square feet to 42,000 square feet will provide more in-house support for diagnostics.

“A tremendous milestone was reached today with the signing of the final contracts,” said David Caplan, Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal. “Hospitals are one of the pillars of Ontario communities. With a commitment of more than $5 billion, we now have more than 100 new and existing hospitals in various stages of expansion and upgrade across Ontario. This project will deliver improved access to health care in Mississauga and the surrounding community.”

“This expansion is an essential part of the government's commitment to renew hospitals,” said George Smitherman, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health and Long-Term Care. “Such projects will help lower wait times and improve access to quality family health care for all. Once complete, area residents will be able to get the care they need, when they need it, close to home.”

The team, led by Bondfield Construction Co. Ltd., includes financing arranged by National Bank. Financial close on the project is expected shortly and construction will follow soon after. Project costs will be released at financial close.

“Residents of western Mississauga need the resources of the expanded Credit Valley Hospital,” said Mississauga-Streetsville MPP, Bob Delaney. “With an aging population and a rapidly-growing community, we need its expanded maternity suite and complex continuing care beds.  We are delighted to be planning the return of the construction cranes.”

“This expansion is important to the patients we serve in Mississauga, the regions of Peel and Halton and beyond,” said The Credit Valley Hospital President and CEO, Wayne Fyffe. “The ability to meet the ever growing needs of our maternal and child population is essential in this rapidly growing community. Additional inpatient beds for our complex continuing care, palliative care and surgical patients is essential and will help to reduce wait times in our emergency department. We appreciate government's attention to the pressures we face in these areas. ”

Infrastructure Ontario and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care will work with The Credit Valley Hospital to redevelop and expand the hospital, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable. Infrastructure Ontario is a Crown corporation dedicated to managing some of the province's larger and more complex infrastructure renewal projects - ensuring they are built on time and on budget.

This project is guided by principles outlined in the province's Building a Better Tomorrow framework, which ensures public ownership of core assets such as hospitals, schools, and water and wastewater facilities.
