Infrastructure Ontario’s Nuclear Procurement Project

In June 2006, the Ontario government implemented a 20-year Energy Plan to address growing demand for electricity and to stabilize energy supplies, ensuring they are balanced, clean, reliable and affordable.

The energy plan has five main components, which include:

  • reducing demand by 6,300 megawatts through conservation
  • doubling the use of renewable energy to 15,700 megawatts - water, wind and solar
  • increasing gas-fired power generation to handle peak demands periods
  • maintaining existing nuclear generation capacity at 14,000 megawatts
  • eliminating coal-fired generation by 2014

A commercial team directed by Infrastructure Ontario will manage the procurement process to select a nuclear reactor vendor. Other team members will include Ontario Power Generation, Bruce Power, Ministry of Energy and Ministry of Finance.

This project will have a two phase RFP process. The first phase will begin March 7, 2008 when four internationally recognized vendors will be invited to submit their proposals.
