About the project:
The redevelopment project at the University Centre site will consist of a revitalized University Centre, transforming the former acute care facility into a state-of-the-art rehabilitation hospital for adults who have experienced traumatic and often life-altering illness and/or injury.
The redevelopment project will also make way for Toronto Rehab’s new iDAPT (Intelligent Design for Adaptation, Participation and Technology) research initiative and the creation of one of the most advanced rehabilitation research facilities in the world.
The project includes:
- Renovations to the existing 12-storey east wing and four-storey north wing
- A new 13-storey patient care and research tower
- New dedicated research and education space
- A new, more accessible entrance for patients and families
- Relocating the Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation program from Hillcrest Centre to upgraded and expanded patient care facilities at the University Centre
- Moving the University Centre’s Geriatric and Neuro Rehabilitation Programs into custom designed clinical space
Community Benefits:
- At the peak of construction, an estimated 300 workers will be on site daily
- Over the course of construction, approximately $39.7 million will be paid in construction salaries and $44 million worth of materials will be purchased locally.
- The hospital remains publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable
