About the Project

GO Rail Expansion will transform the transportation network in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area over the next decade. Metrolinx will transform the GO Transit rail network into a system that will deliver two-way, all-day service every 15 minutes over core segments of the GO Rail network. The Highway 401 Rail Tunnel project involved the construction of two rail tunnels under Highway 401 and Highway 409, passing beneath 21 lanes of traffic. The project reached substantial completion on July 21, 2021. The tunnels will support future increased capacity on the GO Kitchener rail corridor.

Features

To help increase capacity on the Kitchener Corridor, which passes under Highway 401/409 through a tunnel, infrastructure upgrades are required:

  • Construction of two tunnels under Highway 401/409 to accommodate two additional tracks, future signaling and communications infrastructure
  • Replacing footings of retaining walls that support the ramp from eastbound Highway 409 to eastbound Highway 401
