Request for Qualifications Issued

The Kingston General Hospital Redevelopment Project has reached a significant milestone today with the release of a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) for project teams to finance and redevelop the hospital and the Cancer Centre of Southeastern Ontario.

This is the first step in selecting a project team that will be responsible for over 170,000 square feet of new construction and renovations 143,000 square feet of both facilities.

Once completed, the state-of-the-art facilities will house an expanded and renovated Cancer Centre, expansion to the Central Processing Services, Intensive Care and In-Centre Dialysis Units, new inpatient units for Acute Mental Health, Paediatrics and Medical-Surgical patients.

“This marks an important milestone for the Kingston community,” said Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal David Caplan. “The project is part of the government's five-year $30 billion plus infrastructure investment plan that represents the biggest investment in health care infrastructure in more than a generation.”

“Our government is committed to upgrading and modernizing health care so patients will have better access to services,” said Minister of Health and Long-Term Care George Smitherman.

“Our communities deserve the very best health care facilities we can offer and it's exciting to be moving forward with the expansion of our Cancer Care Centre,” said John Gerretsen, MPP Kingston and the Islands. “I am pleased that our government is able to bring this reality one step closer.”

“This signifies our commitment to keep growing and evolving to meet the health care needs of the patients and families we serve,” said President and CEO, Kingston General Hospital Joe de Mora.

RFQ submissions will be reviewed to short-list contractors with the construction experience, the qualified personnel and the financial strength to deliver a project of this size and complexity. Short-listed teams will then be invited to respond to a Request for Proposals (RFP) to build and finance the new facility. The RFP is expected to be released in fall 2007.

Infrastructure Ontario will work with Kingston General Hospital to redevelop the hospital, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable. Infrastructure Ontario is a Crown corporation dedicated to managing some of the province's larger and more complex infrastructure renewal projects-ensuring they are built on time and on budget.

This project is guided by principles outlined in the Province's Building a Better Tomorrow framework, which ensures public ownership of core assets such as hospitals, schools, and water and wastewater facilities. The Kingston General Hospital project is one of many infrastructure projects being upgraded and modernized under ReNew Ontario, the government's five-year, $30-billion plus public infrastructure investment plan.
