OTTAWA -Jim Watson, MPP for Ottawa West-Nepean, joined hospital officials from Queensway Carleton Hospital and The Ottawa Hospital, construction workers and community members today to celebrate a major milestone in the construction of a new satellite cancer centre at the Queensway Carleton Hospital. The event follows a donation announcement by Dan and Roger Greenberg who are each donating $1 million to the new cancer centres at Queensway Carleton Hospital and The Ottawa Hospital.

Dan Greenberg is Chair of the Queensway Carleton Hospital Foundation's Building on Our Strengths Campaign and Roger Greenberg is Honorary Co-chair of The Ottawa Hospital Foundation's 20-20 Campaign.

The expansion project at Queensway Carleton Hospital will include a new four-storey building that will house three radiation treatment machines, two clinics and 33 chemotherapy spaces and a seven-storey parking structure.

This project is a partnership with The Ottawa Hospital Regional Cancer Program, an integrated cancer program that aims to improve cancer treatment by expanding radiation and associated cancer services at the two local hospitals; Queensway Carleton and The Ottawa Hospital.

The building team led by PCL began construction almost one year ago. Construction is expected to be completed in fall 2009. There are about 180 workers on site daily, and 75 per cent of the trades are from the local community.

Infrastructure Ontario and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care will work with the Queensway Carleton Hospital to expand the hospital, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable.  Infrastructure Ontario is a Crown corporation dedicated to managing some of the province's larger and more complex infrastructure renewal projects - ensuring they are built on time and on budget.
