20 Years of Building Ontario: Celebrating Infrastructure Ontario’s Legacy

This year marks a major milestone for us at Infrastructure Ontario (IO): 20 years of delivering public infrastructure that shapes the lives of Ontario residents every day. Since our inception in November 2005, IO has grown into a trusted partner in building, financing, and managing the province’s most vital assets—from hospitals and highways to courthouses and communities.

A Vision for Modern Infrastructure

Established as a Crown agency, IO was created to bring innovation, accountability, and efficiency to public infrastructure delivery. Our mission: To support the Ontario government in modernizing infrastructure and real estate through strategic partnerships and sound financial stewardship. And that vision hasn’t changed two decades later. As our journey continues, were focused on doing meaningful work that makes a difference for the people of Ontario.

A Model of Delivery Excellence

IO pioneered the use of the public private partnerships (P3) model in Ontario, supporting the delivery of large-scale projects. Our work earned us international recognition, and we’re positioned as a leader in infrastructure delivery. While P3 is where public goals meet private innovation, it’s the people behind the projects who truly make it work. Our expertise, dedication, and teamwork continue to drive our progress. Today, we consider a range of procurement options in delivering major infrastructure projects to ensure we select the best option for each.

Diverse Business Lines, One Purpose

IO was founded in 2005 to deliver public infrastructure through innovative partnerships. By merging with the Ontario Strategic Infrastructure Financing Authority and the Ontario Realty Corporation, we united expertise and resources that have allowed us to create lasting value for Ontarians. Over two decades, we have grown in scope, scale and impact, and expanded our services to meet the evolving needs of the province. 

Today, our work spans five core business lines:

  • Project Delivery: Leading the procurement and delivery of complex infrastructure projects, including hospitals, transit, and justice facilities.
  • Asset Management and Modernization: Managing one of the largest and most diverse real estate portfolios in Canada, ensuring government spaces are efficient and sustainable while supporting Ontario’s growth.
  • Development: By bringing together the public and private sectors to create needed homes and infrastructure, we’re creating vibrant, mixed-use communities around transit hubs that support housing, mobility, and economic growth.
  • Lending: Providing affordable, long-term financing to municipalities and non-profits for local infrastructure projects.
  • Commercial Advisory: Advising on complex commercial transactions, including asset optimization and land development.
