A look at the CAMH Phase 1D Redevelopment Project on World Mental Health Day

World Mental Health Day, taking place this year on October 10, is a perfect time to highlight the progress of construction and ongoing dedication of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) in Toronto. As Canada’s largest mental health teaching hospital and one of the world’s leading research centres in its field, CAMH sets the standards for mental health care, research, education, and leading social change.

About CAMH and the Phase 1D Redevelopment Project

Through the multi-phase transformation of its Queen Street West site, CAMH is turning what was once a walled institution into an inclusive, respectful, and dignified campus that helps break down stigma and better address the unique mental health needs of patients. The recent Phase 1D redevelopment and previous redevelopment projects are just a few ways in which they are providing world-class care and advancing the understanding of mental health.

The CAMH Phase 1D redevelopment project is part of a broader vision to transform mental health care facilities and services. This fourth and final phase of the hospital’s broader redevelopment project includes the construction of a new building – the Secure Care and Recovery building. This facility will support CAMH’s forensic services, which currently operates out of an old, institutional building that was not built for modern concepts of forensic health care.

Once completed, the Secure Care and Recovery building will include dedicated family visitation areas in inpatient units, enclosed outdoor areas to support recovery, outpatient service, and security and building support services. The aim is to create a space that is not only functional, but therapeutic while promoting healing and recovery.

Construction update

Construction on the CAMH Phase 1D redevelopment project began in February 2024, with site preparation and excavation well underway. Demolition activity, shoring, and caissons has begun, and Heritage Works have commenced. These activities are necessary to be able to lay the foundation for the structural framework of the development. The demolition process clears the way for new construction, while shoring ensures that the surrounding structures are protected and stable during excavation. Caissons are being installed to provide deep foundations that will support the weight of the building. Heritage Works are being conducted carefully to preserve any significant historical elements, ensuring that the project respects both modern needs and historical integrity.

Impact of World Mental Health Day on the project

World Mental Health Day is a global initiative to raise awareness about mental health issues around the world and to mobilize efforts in support of mental health while promoting mental health advocacy. This day provides an opportunity for all stakeholders working on and with mental health, to talk about their work, and what more needs to be done to make mental health care a reality for people worldwide. The Phase 1D redevelopment project aligns with this year’s theme of “It is Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace,” which highlights the importance of mental health in professional settings.

By investing in state-of-the-art facilities and expanding their range of services, CAMH is progressing toward improving access to mental health care and ensuring everyone receives the support that they need.

As we observe World Mental Health Day, it is important to acknowledge the work being done by CAMH and other mental health organizations and hospitals around the world. The redevelopment of CAMH’s buildings is more than just a construction project -- it is a symbol of progress and commitment to improving mental health care for all. As we look to the future, CAMH continues to be a leader in highlighting the importance of mental health care and working to break down barriers and reduce stigma.
