About the Project
- The Government of Ontario partnered with Host Kilmer Service Centres (HKSC)* to redevelop provincial highway service centres along Highways 400 and 401.
- The newly modernized service centres provide travelers with safe and accessible facilities at which to rest, eat and refuel, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year round.
*On May 26, 2019, Host Kilmer Service Centres sold its interest in the Project to Arjun Infrastructure Partners Ltd. and Fengate Asset Management.

Features
- 20 of Ontario's 23 highway service centres were reconstructed to include modern amenities, fuel and restaurant services, enhanced tourism information and upgraded, accessible washrooms.
- Three remaining service centres constructed during the 1990s will be evaluated for redevelopment after 2018.
- Redeveloped centres offer ample car parking, enhanced truck facilities, quick service dining, convenience retail, tourism information, free WiFi connection, fully accessible washrooms for families and disabled individuals, outdoor patios and dedicated pet exercise areas.
- As of August 2011, 14 of the 20 new highway service centres were complete and fully operational, providing travellers access to the following services :
- Fuel Provider and Convenience Store
- Canadian Tire operates a full service fuel station and convenience store at each of the service centres
- Quick Service Dining
- Each service centres offers a variety of dining options featuring a mix of local, national and international brands
- Ontario Tourism Information Centre
- Staff-operated Tourism Information Centres are featured at Tilbury South service centre near Windsor and Bainsville service centre near the Ontario-Quebec border
- Self-service provincial tourism kiosks can be found at all other service centres, offering information on local, regional and provincial attractions and events year round
- Images of the local area, as well as other regions of Ontario, are featured throughout the service centre spaces
Community And Green Benefits
- Designed and built for the next 50 years with environmentally responsible and sustainable features, the new service centres are constructed to meet the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification standard.
Environmentally-responsible and sustainable design features include:
- Water-efficient landscaping using drought resistant planting
- Installation of water-efficient fixtures in washrooms, such as waterless urinals and touch-less faucets, to reduce water use by more than 40 per cent
- Elimination of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) in the heating and cooling equipment - chlorofluorocarbons are refrigerants that cause ozone layer depletion
- Optimized energy performance by using energy efficient equipment
- Use of regional materials that contain a minimum of 15 per cent recycled content
- Use of adhesives, sealants, paints, coatings and carpets that are low in Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) to meet standards such as Green Seal or the Green Label Indoor Quality Test Program
Economic Benefits
- At the peak of construction, it is estimated that approximately 350 construction workers were employed on each site daily.
- Each service centre employs approximately 100 to 150 people; in total, up to 2,500 people are employed across the service centre system.
