About the Project

Ontario is working to protect communities and better support modern policing operations by updating Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) facilities across the province. This is the third phase of the OPP modernization plan for its facilities. In this phase, 12 new detachments and one regional headquarters will be constructed. These sites were determined based on priority needs of the OPP for the respective regions/catchment areas.

The new detachments will be located in:

  • Ignace
  • Niagara
  • Bracebridge
  • New Liskeard
  • Burlington
  • Kenora
  • Lancaster
  • Red Lake
  • Sioux Lookout
  • Killaloe
  • Espanola/McKerrow
  • Wawa

A new modern regional headquarters for the OPP’s North West region will also be built in Thunder Bay.

Features

The structures being replaced are an average of 40 to 60 years old and well past their expected lifespan. They need to be replaced so the OPP can offer the best possible service to the people it serves.

New detachments will range in size, and will include:

  • Closed circuit television (CCTV) systems to be included in all the new sites;
  • secure sallyport allowing for direct access to secure holding cells and prisoner processing area;
  • new accessibility standards in the public area;
  • exhibit/evidence vaults with a proper processing area;
  • holding cells;
  • modern building infrastructure to meet changing technology requirements.

Community And Green Benefits

  • The new detachments will be designed and built to meet the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver standard, which recognizes buildings with reduced environmental impacts.

Economic Benefits

  • The project will create and support hundreds of direct and indirect jobs.
