Short-listed Companies Invited To Bid

TORONTO - Rouge Valley Health System's redevelopment reached another key milestone with the release of a request for proposals (RFP) to build and finance the Ajax and Pickering Hospital Phase 1 project.

The Rouge Valley Health System Ajax and Pickering Hospital Phase 1 project is expected to begin construction in fall 2007. Highlights of the redevelopment include:

  • a new Emergency Department
  • expanded mental health and ambulatory care
  • a new laboratory
  • a new Complex Continuing Care Unit with capacity for 30 beds
  • expanded Diagnostic Imaging and Cardiac Diagnostic areas

“Today's call for construction teams brings Durham region one step closer to having a larger facility with a wider range of health care services under one roof. We are pleased to see a high level of interest for this project from the development industry,” said David Caplan, Minister of Public Infrastructure Renewal. “This project is one of many in the McGuinty government's $30 billion plus investment plan to modernize public infrastructure while ensuring value for taxpayers' dollars.”

“This project is an essential part of the McGuinty government's plan to modernize hospitals and reduce wait times across the province,” commented George Smitherman, Minister of Health and Long-Term Care.

The following companies, being invited to respond to the RFP, were short-listed from a request for qualifications process issued in November 2006:

  • Aecon Buildings
  • Bondfield Construction Co. Ltd.
  • Carillion Canada Inc.
  • EllisDon Corp.
  • Vanbots Construction Corp.

These companies were chosen based on their development, construction and financial capacity to undertake a project of this size and complexity.

“The Ajax and Pickering Hospital Phase 1 project will bring welcome improvements to health care services for Durham's residents,” said Wayne Arthurs, MPP for Pickering-Ajax-Uxbridge. “Today's announcement demonstrates our government's commitment to providing the resources and infrastructure that will address the health care needs of our growing community."

“Our patients and their families deserve a modern hospital with the programs, equipment and expertise needed for them to receive life-saving health care,” said Rik Ganderton, Interim Chief Executive Officer, Rouge Valley Health System. “With the support of the government, we've made an important step in this direction.”

Infrastructure Ontario will work with the Rouge Valley Health System to redevelop the Ajax and Pickering Hospital, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable.  Infrastructure Ontario is a Crown corporation dedicated to managing some of the Province's larger and more complex infrastructure renewal projects -- ensuring they are built on time and on budget.

This project is guided by principles outlined in the Province's Building a Better Tomorrow framework, which ensures public ownership of core assets such as hospitals, schools, and water and wastewater facilities. The Rouge Valley Health System's Ajax and Pickering Hospital Phase 1 project is one of many infrastructure projects being upgraded and modernized under ReNew Ontario, the government's five-year, $30-billion plus public infrastructure investment plan.
