TORONTO - A sign of the Rouge Valley Health System Ajax and Pickering site's future was unveiled today. The project sign, located at the main entrance to the hospital, was uncovered by hospital and government officials with highlights of the key components of the new expansion and redevelopment.

Wayne Arthurs, Pickering-Ajax-Uxbridge MPP and Hume Martin, Rouge Valley Health System's President and CEO performed the unveiling. The project is being delivered through ReNew Ontario, the government's $30-billion plus infrastructure investment plan.

“Today marks an important milestone for this project and is an exciting example of improved health care soon becoming a reality for Durham Region residents,” said MPP Wayne Arthurs. “The redevelopment at the Ajax and Pickering site will offer a wider range of much needed services for our community. With the recent issue of the Request for Qualifications to redevelop the hospital, the province is following through on its promise to build better health care for Ontarians.”

Increasing Rouge Valley Health System's capacity will ensure residents have access to modern health care programs and services well into the future. The hospital's expansion and redevelopment will include:

  • a new emergency department;
  • expanded laboratory, mental health and ambulatory care;
  • a Complex Continuing Care Unit with capacity for 30 beds; and
  • the development of Diagnostic Imaging and Cardiac Diagnostic Areas.

“This redevelopment project great news for Rouge Valley's staff who passionately deliver high quality health care to our community,” said Hume Martin, Rouge Valley Health System's President and CEO. “The province's leadership to move forward with this project is really a show of support for the residents of our community and the healthcare professionals working for the Rouge Valley Health System.”

The Rouge Valley Health System will manage this project with Infrastructure Ontario, a Crown corporation dedicated to the renewal of the province's hospitals, courthouses and other essential public assets. Ensuring appropriate public control and ownership, Infrastructure Ontario uses alternative financing and procurement to rebuild vital infrastructure, on time and on budget.

All infrastructure projects are guided by the principles in the government's Building a Better Tomorrow Framework, to ensure public ownership of core public assets such as hospitals, schools and water and wastewater infrastructure.
