Project Type:
Development
Infrastructure Type:
Transit-Oriented Community
Client:
Ministry of Infrastructure

About the Project

Infrastructure Ontario (IO), with the Ministry of Infrastructure (MOI) is leading the transit-oriented communities program as it relates to the “New Subway Transit Plan for the GTA,” part of the government’s smart, forward-thinking plan to build new, sustainable transit. The transit-oriented communities (TOC) approach provides real opportunity to build vibrant, higher density, mixed-use communities that are connected to or within a short distance to transit stations.

IO, on behalf of the province, is committed to working with the City of Toronto on the first Scarborough Subway Extension TOC development site at the southeast corner of Lawrence Avenue East and McCowan Road. The Lawrence East site consists of one site which has been designated for TOC use. The site will be developed in line with the stated objectives of the TOC program.

This Scarborough Subway Extension (SSE) TOC development site brings a true mixed-use community featuring housing, parkland and employment infrastructure in proximity to the Lawrence and McCowan Station and Scarborough General Hospital. The TOC will be served by the future SSE service linking to the entire TTC network and its links to GO regional service, and the encompassing major highways.

Community input is a key component of TOCs and began in March 2024, following the city’s planning review.
