About the Project
- The new health-care complex is approximately 970,000 square feet and built on a 32-acre section of the 40-acre site in St. Catherines.
- The new complex replaced the aging St. Catharines General and Ontario Street sites of the Niagara Health.

- The Walker Family Cancer Centre provides close-to-home treatment for the more than 1,200 cancer patients who used to have to travel to Hamilton or Toronto for life-saving radiation treatment.
- The new Regional Longer-Term Mental Health Centre provides longer-term inpatient mental health beds, combined with acute inpatient mental health beds and ambulatory care services for Niagara residents.
- The new Regional Cardiac Catheterization Centre provides diagnostic investigation services, reducing hospitalizations for heart disease, lowering wait times and improving access to treatment.

- CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear) containment capability to deal with infectious outbreaks and disasters.

Community And Green Benefits
- Environmentally-friendly design features that achieved LEED Silver certification as part of the government's commitment to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions.
- The new facility allows the Niagara Health System to expand programs, recruit new staff and physically improve the delivery of quality healthcare.
- Provides acute and critical care, surgical, emergency and ambulatory services all under one roof.
- For the first time, provides regional services for cancer treatment, cardiac and mental health care.
- 80 per cent single patient rooms.
Economic Benefits
- The project provided a sizeable boost to the regional and Ontario economies during construction by directly and indirectly supporting and creating approximately 5,400 jobs, many of which were in the Niagara region.
- An estimated 1000 workers were on site daily at the peak of construction.
- Approximately 200 new health-care jobs were created once the facility opened, to support the new regional services in cancer, cardiac and mental health disease.
