About the Project

  • The Region of Waterloo is delivering a rapid transit system that will serve residents in Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo.
  • The rapid transit system will be publicly owned and integrated fully with the Region's existing public transit service, Grand River Transit.
  • The project is funded by all three levels of government (regional, provincial and federal).

Infrastructure Ontario's Role:

  • Infrastructure Ontario acted as P3 Commercial Procurement Advisor, providing advice to the Region during the procurement phase.

Features

The rapid transit system will provide light rail transit (LRT) in two stages. Stage 1 of the rapid transit system includes:

  • a 19 km light rail transit (LRT) route from Conestoga Mall in Waterloo to Fairview Park Mall in Kitchener with 16 station stops
  • a 17 km route of adapted bus rapid transit (aBRT) from Fairview Park Mall to the Ainslie Street Terminal in Cambridge.
